The 'Shit Hit The Fan' Checklist

This can be used for natural disasters such as hurricanes.

My plan is to set this up to be modified by people logged on here - one day...

Print this out and check off as you put it in the vehicle. Of course, some of these items are optional. Try loading this into your vehicle before it becomes necessary. Keep the vehicle in good working order.

A friend with his vehicle - you may need something to eat and spare parts for your Truck. I hear long pig will hold you over :)

Vehicle

4x4 Built
Fuel - Same as food - you won't be able to get it after about 4 hours if the electricity is on. I lived through Katrina (about 70 miles from New Orleans) so I know this for a FACT. Best thing is to see it coming and get extra. 50 gal may be enough as you may not get far anyway. If the electricity goes out, you will get no fuel easily.
Spare parts if needed. Fuel pump, alternator, turbo, water pump.
Trailer possibly, but it will hold you back if you need to run.

Clothing

Don't try to take much. Stay warm and dry. Won't be staying too clean without a washing machine.

Camo gloves
Camo Coat, light jacket
Camo rain gear - if time and room permits
Good waterproof hiking boots
Extra pair of shoes and socks - wet feet make you miserable

Food
If the Shit Hits The Fan regionally (large), nationally, or globally, the grocery stores will run out of food in 1 day. So you're royally screwed without a supply or the means to take someone else's food. And let's face it, if your kids are hungry you'll feed them one way or another IF you are a man. Getting food is not a problem if you only have to drive a couple hundred miles to get it. If everyone within that 100 mile radius goes to get food there will be a shortage. Just picture a 600 mile radius to get food. That'll be rough. Get food to keep on hand that'll stay good for a while like canned and dried or MREs. This article - Can The Dependency, by Karen Hood - is common sense on stocking food. You'll most likely only need enough food for about 6 months. Either things will straighten out by this time or there'll be a shortage of people from starvation and you'll be better off.

Meals-Ready-to-Eat - compact, lasts for years, high calorie
Canned goods - heavier but will last
Drinks - Coffee, Scotch, and Bourbon and  - could come in handy for plenty of reasons like trading
5 gal Water, reusable jug, and some purification pills

Tools

Maps and GPS (will sats still be working? Most likely unless wide scale war)
Hi-Lift Jack - keep it on vehicle
2 - 5 gal gerry cans of fuel and extra fuel on a trailer
Machete - keep it on vehicle
Tow strap and chain - keep it on vehicle
Snatch-block - keep it on vehicle
Basic hand tools - you won't have time for a rebuild - keep them in vehicle
Sockets, Wrenches, Screwdrivers
prybar
2 lb hand mall
Front hub nut socket VERY IMPORTANT
1/4 12 point box end wrench for pulling the spider gear retainer pin
Flashlight and extra batteries - keep in vehicle
Shovel - small - keep it on vehicle
Axe - keep it on vehicle
Air Compressor - On Board Air would be best
Jumper Cables - keep them in vehicle

Parts

U-joints
Fluids - Gear oil, ATF, motor oil, brake fluid
Tire patch/plug kit
Belts and Hoses or just check them regularly

Camping Gear

Small Tent
Tarp
Nylon string
Sleeping bags
Cookware and utensils - Bare minimum - eat out of cans

Fishing
If you have a place in mind to hole up that has a pond

Rod and reel. I have a 3 ft snoopy rod with a Zebco 33 I like for this.
Hooks, sinkers, corks

Weapons
Keep in mind that you'll probably end up packing all the weapons while the wife strolls along. Don't bring all of this!

Rifle, 22 Cal for low noise shooting w/ scope (consider a .22 pistol). 5 lbs
Bolt Action Rifle, .308, 30-06, etc w/ scope. 8 lbs
Assault Rifle .308 w/ 10 mags loaded, sling it across the front with a sling. 18 lbs
Rifle, Assault, .223, for wife to use w/ 5 mags loaded 10 lbs
Tactical Shotgun, Mossberg 590 or Remington 1100, close to med range protection, 55 shot bandolier, 3" 00 Buck, sling the gun over the back with a sling. 7 lbs
Pistol, .45 auto w/ extra clips, Primary defense up close 4 lbs
Pistol, .357 mag for back-up, Secondary defense up close, boot gun. 3 lbs
Assault Vest for carrying the mags, .45, maybe even the 00 Buck and don't use the bandolier.
If you can still walk with this on you're too much of a man already - just leave all this behind
The ultimate would be a silenced .22 rifle or a .17.
Strap a big gaudy bowie knife on the outside of the boot, if you need to pull the gun in your boot make it look like your going for the knife. Give you an edge.

Misc.

Towels - to dry off if your lucky enough to find a shower or if you get wet
Soap for cleaning
Aspirin. Take medicine, etc.? Better bring it. Think about keeping spares.
Do you wear contacts, you need saline and glasses if you have problem.
Batteries
First Aid kit with Snake bite kit
Matches and lighters
CB Radio
Jerry Cans for gas and water
Bring plenty of lighting for night repairs
Check your spare if its doubtful. Bring two.
Know the area you'll be driving so that you won't pass the "last chance" gas station on the way

All above being said, the important things are to bring a trust-worthy friend with his vehicle, food if you can, water definitely, weapons and ammo. Everything else can be obtained along the way.
